John Oates IV, third son of John Oates and Mary Henry [McGill] Oates, was born on the 6th day of July 1786 in Crowders, Lincoln Co., North Carolina (which was later to be Gaston County). John was the forth of eight children. His parents where active members of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church; of which John would become a Ruling Elder in later life.
John was married to the former Miss Elizabeth Reid McClure, daughter of John and Elizabeth [Oates] McClure, on the 15th of April 1811. Together, John and Elizabeth Oates had eight children:

Margaret McClure (1825-1871)

Sadly, Elizabeth Oates died in January 1841 after 30 years of their marriage. On March 7th 1842, John married his second wife, Hannah Montgomery; whom he had three children:

Samuel Wiley (1844-1862)
Margaret Elizabeth (1846-1846)
During the birth of their daughter, Margaret, Hannah died; leaving John a widower once more.
The Oates children wanted to move west, as so many were doing. So, about 1851, John Oates at the age of 64; joined them on a journey that took then through Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee to the waters of the White River. There they headed to Des Ark, Arkansas; settling further west in Pope County. Here in the community of Pottsville, the Oates family helped start Pisgah A.R.P. Church.

Died at his residence in Pope Co., Arkansas on the 28th of October, 1858, Mr. John Oats in the seventy third year of his age. The subject of this obituary was born in Lincoln Co., N. In the Autumn of 1851, he with some others, principally from Pisgah, emigrated to Arkansas. … in abour twelve months after their arrival at their new home, a minister was sent to them, they were organized and he was chosen one of the ruling elders.
