Joseph Dixon Oates, the sixth child of John Oates, IV and the former Elizabeth Reid McClure, was born in the bounds of Pisgah A.R.P. Church; where his father was a ruling elder. In 1850, Joseph along with his father, several brothers and other families, emigrated west through Georgia and Tennessee to the fertile soil around Pope County, Arkansas. Here they started farms and became charter members of Pottsville A.R.P. Church.

On January 24th 1855, Joseph married Miss Nancy Drucilla McElwee; whose family had also emigrated west from South Carolina. Joseph and Nancy Oates had the following children:
Robert Murray (1856-1945)
Elizabeth Zillah (1858-1859)
William Leslie McElwee (1861-1943)

Death Notice:
"Many soldiers are daily going to their final resting place...." Such was the fate of Joseph D. Oates, a native of North Carolina. He moved in 1850 to Pope Co., Ark., where he has ever since resided, until the breaking out of the present war. … He volunteered his services in March, 1862 to the Confederate States, and in April was ordered to Corinth. He was in the memorable retreat of the Western army from Corinth to Tupelo, Miss., and in the retreat he contracted the malignant typhoid fever, which finally carried him to the grave. … member of A. R. Church. … He leaves a wife and two small children.
