Death Notice- Tipton Advertiser, 1862.

In the hospital at Paducah, Ky., of a wound received at the battle of Pittsburg Landing, May 7th, JOHN W. DWIGANS; 20 years. Mr. DWIGANS was a son of ROBT. DWIGANS, who resides about three miles west of town. He was a member of Capt. McLoney's Company.

Attached to Dept. of Missouri to March, 1862. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Army of Tennessee, to April, 1862. 3rd Brigade, 6th Division, Army of Tennessee, to July, 1862 and District of Corinth to November, 1862. 3rd Brigade, 6th Division, Left Wing, 13th Army Corps (Old), Dept. of Tennessee, to December, 1862. 3rd Brigade, 6th Division, 16th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, to January, 1863. 3rd Brigade, 6th Division, 17th Army Corps, to September, 1863. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 17th Corps, to April, 1864. 3rd Brigade, 4th Division, 17th Corps, to July, 1865.

Service:
Moved to Jefferson City, Mo., November, 1861, and duty there till March, 1862. Expedition to Booneville December 8, 1861, and to Providence and Booneboro December 14. Moved to Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., March 10, 1862. Battle of Shiloh, Tenn., April 6-7.

Regiment lost during service 5 Officers and 86 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 166 Enlisted men by disease. Total 259.

A new military head stone has recently been erected with the surname spelled "Dwiggans". Which spelling I will add as a maiden name as a variant spelling.

Died of wounds May 7, 1862, Paducah, Ky.

Would have been buried at Paducah. Abt 1867 Union soldiers were exhumed and moved to Mound City National Cemetery - a large number as unknowns. Many headboards were no longer legible or vandalized. John is probably among them.

Dwiggans, William. Age 19. (1st cousin) Residence Tipton, nativity Iowa. same day into same company. Died of typhoid fever Dec. 28, 1861, Jefferson City, Mo.

NOTE- Note for Gender, Birth Location left by Paul R. Dwigans

Both the 1850 and 1860 censuses, as well as some military records, report his birth state as Ohio. The family migrated from Guernsey County, Ohio, sometime in the 1840s.

He is the first cousin of William Dwigans (103480537), not his brother.
