ZUBER CROSSING ACCIDENT TAKES ONE MAN'S LIFE

S. I Bell, Fairfield Section Foreman, is Victim


Seaborn Isaiah Bell, Seaboard Air Line section foreman of Fairfield, died in Munroe Memorial hospital at 8:45 Sunday morning as result of injuries sustained before day in the same morning when his car crashed into a Seaboard switch engine standing on the highway crossing at Zuber.

His wife suffered a fractured shoulder and shock, according to her son, Lester Bell, who was not in the car at the time of the accident. Mr. Bell was driving and with him on the front seat were his wife, their daughter, Mrs. Henry Waters of Savannah, and two year old granddaughter. Mrs. Waters suffered minor bruises and lacerations of the scalp. Her baby was slightly bruised on the forehead. There was no one on the back seat of the car.

Patrolmen investigate

Mrs. Waters told Highway Patrolmen H. D. Doyle and Charles S. Johnson, who investigated the accident that they did not see the locomotive until they were right on it. She said the engine was standing on the crossing and there were no warning lights or signals to apprise them of its presence. The accident occurred at 4:50 Sunday morning.

The train was standing on the Atlantic Coast Line spur of the Dixie Lime Co. where it crossed Gainesville highway blocking the highway, it was said. The spur is used by both the A. C. L. and Seaboard. Mr. Bell was driving south at the time at a rate of about 35 or 40 miles an hour, highway patrolmen said.

The spur crosses the highway at an angle and the car struck the train a glancing blow, demolishing the left side of the car, patrolmen said. It then ran into a deep ditch beside the road where the driver tried to turn to the right and bring it to a stop on a vacant lot beside the road, but the car struck a soft place and turned completely over one time, it was said.

Mr. Bell, 59, was injured on the chest and head and suffered internal injuries. He and Mrs. Bell were driving Mrs. Waters and her baby to Ocala to catch a train for Savannah when the accident occurred.

Funeral Services

Funeral services for Mr. Bell will be held Wednesday afternoon at 4 0'clock in the chapel of Roberts Funeral Home. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park.

A resident of Fairfield for the past ten years, Mr. Bell was born in Burk County, Ga. and lived in Ga. until 1925 when he moved to Florida. At the time of his death he was section foreman for the S. A. L. Railroad and had been connected with them for 27 years. He was a Mason and a member of the Methodist Church.

Mr. Bell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Bell, one son, Lester Bell of Fairfield, two daughters, Mrs. Henry Waters of Savannah, Gal, and Mrs. W. L. Jones of Winter Garden, four sisters, Mrs. H. A. Robbins of Ocala, Mrs. Alma Jerald of Hunters Station, Ga., Mrs. Abbie Lee White and Mrs. Dixie Graham of Savannah, Ga.; five brothers, I. S. Bell of Clewiston, L. V. Bell of Haleyondale, Ga., Hoke S. Bell of the United States Army, Miller and B. P. Bell of Savannah, Ga.
