Christine's correct last name spelling is Helgason. To prevent a duplicate memorial from being created, the name on this memorial is spelled Helgeson as per the Peninsula Genealogical Society cemetery list which was taken from the spelling on her gravestone.

Christine Helgason was born on Washington Island to Teitur T. Helgason and Holmfrida (Vernhardsdottir) Helgason. Her parents and some of her older siblings came to America from Iceland in July 1873 and moved to Washington Island in 1874. Her father Teitur's name at birth was Teitur Teitsson son of Teitur Helgason. At some point after coming to America, Teitur Teitsson took his father's name Helgason and the children also took the last name of Helgason. Christine was one of eight children. Her siblings were: Sigurdur Teitsson or Siebert T. Helgason, Ingvar Teitsson (brother who died in Iceland), Elis Teitsson (brother who died in Iceland), Gudrun Teitsson (sister who was born in Iceland and died before 1880), Elisa Teitsson or Elizabeth "Eliza" Helgason, Gertrude Helgason and Vernard Bernard Helgason.

Sometime after the death of her sister Gertrude Baxter on July 25, 1923 and the death of her mother on September 8, 1923, Christine moved from Washington Island to Fish Creek and was housekeeper for her brother-in-law Gus and nephew Warren Baxter.

Christine's uncle was Bjorn Vernhardsson (Bjorn Helgason) (her mother's brother). He also immigrated to America and lived on Washington Island. He took his father's last name Helgason sometime after coming to America.

The following information was found in Ólafur S. Thorgeirsson's Almanac and was written by Arni Gudmundsen in 1900 regarding Bjorn's ancestry which would also pertain to Christine.

"Björn says he is a direct descendant on his mother's side from Þangbrandi the bishop, and on his father's side from Egill Skallagrímsson."

The same source (Ólafur S. Thorgeirsson's Almanac) gives the following information about her father Teitur Teitsson's immigration and parentage.

1873 "Teitur Teitsson, harbor pilot from Eyrarbakka; his father was Teitur Helgason, also harbor pilot there. He left here [Washington Island] by 1887, and lives in Manitoba."
