Eliza (Helgason) Chambers 1871-1904

The photo MAY be of Eliza Helgason Chambers. It was taken at the Jno. F. Jacobson Photography Studio in Cedar River, Michigan. If it is her, it would've been taken between 1900 and early 1904. I believe the studio was operating from 1900-1910. I have one other photo that was taken at this studio and that photo appears to be Eliza's daughter Matilda.

Eliza was the daughter of Teiter T. Helgason and Holmfrida (Vernhardsdottir) Helgason. She was born at or near Gaulverjabaer, Arnessysla, Iceland and was baptized there on March 5, 1871. Her name at birth was Elisa Teitsson. Eliza's father's name at birth was Teitur Teitsson son of Teitur Helgasson. At some point after coming to America, Teitur Teitsson took his father's name Helgason and the children also took the last name of Helgason.

The Teitsson/Helgason family immigrated to America in July 1873. They moved to Washington Island in 1874.

Eliza was one of eight children. Her siblings were: Sigurdur Teitsson or Siebert T. Helgason, Ingvar Teitsson (brother who died in Iceland), Elis Teitsson (brother who died in Iceland), Gudrun Teitsson (sister who was born in Iceland and died before 1880), Gertrude Helgason, Christine Helgason and Vernard Bernard Helgason.

Eliza married Don Chambers on Christmas Day, December 25, 1892 at Washington, Door, Wisconsin.

Don and Eliza were the parents of: Ray Samuel, Matilda "Lilda" and Manda "Mae" Chambers (picture attached to this memorial)

Eliza's uncle was Bjorn Vernhardsson (Bjorn Helgason) (her mother's brother). He also immigrated to America and lived on Washington Island. He took his father's last name Helgason sometime after coming to America.

The following information was found in Ólafur S. Thorgeirsson's Almanac and was written by Arni Gudmundsen in 1900 regarding Bjorn's ancestry which would also pertain to Eliza.

"Björn says he is a direct descendant on his mother's side from Þangbrandi the bishop, and on his father's side from Egill Skallagrímsson."

The same source (Ólafur S. Thorgeirsson's Almanac) gives the following information about her father Teitur Teitsson's immigration and parentage.

1873 "Teitur Teitsson, harbor pilot from Eyrarbakka; his father was Teitur Helgason, also harbor pilot there. He left here [Washington Island] by 1887, and lives in Manitoba."

Obituary Notice
CHAMBERS – At Fish Creek, Wis., Nov. 10th, 1904, of consumption, ELIZABETH CHAMBERS, age 33 years, 8 months and 12 days.
It is with sorrow that we are again called upon to report through the columns of the Democrat the departure of a beloved friend. Mrs. Don Chambers, a popular lady of this town, died at her home Thursday at 1:30 o'clock. The funeral was held at the Adventist church. Rev. Steinfort, of Ephraim, officiating.
Mrs. Chambers had been failing the past year, and has been confined to her bed most of the time. The physicians did their best to prolong her life.
Mrs. Chambers leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. She was widely known throughout this town, and a large circle of friends are left to mourn her. Who will forget that bright look from those kindly eyes, her frank and winning ways and that ever ready smile which lit up her whole countenance and made her life shine like a radiant sunbeam. At the age of 33, in the bloom of womanhood, God plucked her from earth, just at the time when life was the most hopeful.

There is a reaper whose name is Death,
And with his sickle keen,
He reaps the bearded grain at a breath,
And the flowers that grow between.

O, not in cruelty, not in wrath,
The reaper came that day,
'Twas an angel visited the green earth
And took the flowers away.
A Friend."

"Vernon Helgerson, of Washington Island, was here on Saturday to attend the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Don Chambers."
