H/O Alice (Manifold) Bales and Susannah (Russell) Bales.
Aaron was apparently a person of firm opinions. A birthright Quaker, he retained his membership despite marrying Alice Manifold, who was not a Friend (although her mother's ancestry was firmly Quaker). After Alice died in the summer of 1834 and left him with a house full of children, Aaron decided that he needed another wife quickly. His choice was a non-Quaker neighbor, 30-year-old Susannah Russell, who was apparently willing to take on Aaron and his brood. She and Aaron married in December 1834 and had 7 children of their own. Aaron's marriage out of meeting and less than a year after his wife's death was an offense against Quaker rules. A complaint was brought to his meeting for this offense and a committee appointed to visit him. It did so, and reported back that not only was the complaint justified, but that Aaron had "predicted a future state of punishment" for the committee members. His status as a Quaker came to an end.
