His death notice in the New Castle Courier said that when his funeral was held at the Flat Rock Friends Meetinghouse, "the building was crowded to its utmost capacity, with many remaining outside, unable to gain admittance. This shows the high esteem in which Benjamin Bales was held by the community at large and in losing him the community has lost one of its best citizens." He died of pneumonia.
