He served in the US Navy, 12th and 14th Construction Battalions (the Sea Bees).

Enlisting in June 1942, he served on the Aleutian Islands of Adak and Dutch Harbor from Nov. 42 to Nov. 43. In March 1945 he landed with the Marines at Saipan where he witnessed firsthand the mass suicides by Japanese civilans. From April 1945 to Nov 45 he was stationed on Okinawa. While offshore there he weathered the 1,000 plane Kamikaze raids against the US invasion fleet. He was discharged as a Carpenters Mate 3rd Class at Jacksonville Florida on December 1, 1945.

After the war he was a self-employed house painter and carpenter.

Turkey hunting was his favorite sport, and he was also indescribably proud of being a Middleton.

Words cannot express how much I miss this old man. I was the child of his old age, and he was absolutely foolish over me.
