Rev. John H. Scott, 86, retired Methodist minister and former Winfield resident, died Thursday at 9:30 am at Wesley hospital in Wichita. He had been in failing health for three years and a patient at Wesley hospital the past 16 months.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 pm at the Morris Funeral home. Interment will be in Highland cemetery.
Mr. Scott was born in Omaha, Nebr., Jan. 29, 1865, the son of Richard and Martha Scott. He was one of the early day preachers in the state and held many pastorates in the Methodist churches, one of the first being at Freeport, in 1895. He had been in the Central Kansas conference for many years prior to his retirement some 30 years ago, when he came to Winfield.
Some of the churches in the state that he served included Ness City, Udall, Attica, Whitewater, Burrton, Patridge, Pratt, Belle Plaine, Douglass, Hutchinson, Hadley, Byers, Whiteman, Chikaskia, Hazelton and others.
His first wife and mother of his children was the former Martha Grace Hatler, who died Dec. 28, 1939. In 1945 he united in marriage to Louise Klink, who survives.
Children living are Dr. J M Scott, Tulane university, New Orleans, La., Dr. Gordon H Scott, Detroit, Mich., Mrs. C F Newman, Udall, and Mrs. A D Welch, Cleveland, Ohio; one brother Claude Scott, Pratt; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
