Death takes Pioneer Woman, Mrs. Alice Shepard of Croft had been a Resident of Pratt County since 1884
Mrs. Alice Eliza Shepard, pioneer Pratt countian, died in Community hospital this morning at 4:30 o'clock failing to survive injuries and shock induced by a fall at her home early Wednesday morning. Her left hip was broken. She was brought to the local hospital Thursday afternoon, where her condition was declared critical.
Mrs. Shepard was born in Andrew county, Missouri, and with the exception of five years, had lived in Pratt county since 1884. With her husband, E J Shepard, whose death occurred in November, 1917, she came to this county from Missouri and settled on a claim about eight miles southwest of Pratt. In 1888 the family went to Marshall county but returned to Pratt county in 1893. At the time of her death she was 77 years, eight months old. She had made her home for a number of years with her daughter, Mrs. C W Casteel, of Haviland.
Survivors include Mrs. M A Leak of Pratt, Mrs. H M Bryan of Cullison, Mrs. Jesse Smith of Haviland, Mrs. Casteel of Haviland; seven sons, Arthur and Lacey of Los Angeles, Calif., Chester of Amarillo, Texas, Kirk of Pratt, Charley of Haviland, Homer and Paul of Pratt; seven brothers, Monroe Scott, Ashland; J David Scott, Pratt; Rev. John H Scott, Winfield; Charles I Scott, Pratt; Walter Scott, Wichita; Claude Scott, Pratt; and Delmont Scott, Denver, Colo.
A daughter Pearl died in girlhood and two brothers, Sam and Will Scott, preceded her in death also. Thirty-two grandchildren survive and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the First Methodist church conducted by Rev. Charles E King. Burial will be in the Coats cemetery. Sappington-Calbeck mortuary is in charge.
