HANNAH MARY KARICOFE

Hannah Mary (Early) Karicofe, 99, died Sunday, April 25, 2010, in Summit Square, where she had been a resident for 10 years.

She was born October 15, 1910, in New Hope, a daughter of Joseph Myers and Mary Susan (Leonard) Early. She graduated from New Hope High School in 1927, received her teaching certificate from Farmville State Teachers College, and received a B.A. degree from Madison College. Her early teaching years were spent at Hebron, McKinley and Newport News schools.

In 1943 she joined the American Red Cross to operate a "Club Mobile" for the troops in France and England. After the war, she taught as an exchange teacher for one year in London. She then taught in Baltimore County, Maryland, while attending Johns Hopkins University at night to earn her master's degree in education. She continued to teach in Baltimore County until she retired.

After retirement, she moved to Waynesboro, and soon married S. Newton Karicofe, an old friend from younger days. They had 15 happy years together on a farm near Churchville. He died in 1996, and Mrs. Karicofe moved to Summit Square in Waynesboro several years later. She was a life-long member of Bethany-Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Surviving are a brother, Joseph L. Early and his wife, Peggy, of Waynesboro; two step children, Keith Karicofe and his wife, Jane Karicofe, of Churchville, and Penny Thompson and her husband, Dr. James Thompson, of Bridgewater; six step grandchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2546 Rockfish Road, Waynesboro, with the Reverend Tim Bohlmann officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the , 1920-H Medical Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
