Thomas Shannon for many years a resident of the Loda community, departed this life on Wednesday of last week at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Reed, and family in Bloomington, Il., where he has been making his home for some time. The body, accompanied by relatives, was brought to Loda Friday & funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's church by Rev. Fr. Markey. Burial took place at Pine Ridge cemetery.
Mr. Shannon was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 12/21/1826. (note: death certificate states born 1825) He came to American when he was 21 years of age, coming almost directly to Loda, where, with the exception of the past seven years, when he went to Bloomingto make his home with his daughter, he always resided. He was married seventy-two years ago to Catherine Dixon who proceeded him in death about 27 years ago.
He is survived by 5 children: Mrs. Patrick Doyle of Buckley, Il, Mrs. E.J. Doyle, of Kankakee, Thomas Shannon of Winamac, Ind. Mrs. G.W. Reed of Bloomington, Il. & Mrs. Robert Boyd of Loda. There are also 23 grandchildren & 2- great grandchildren. One great granddaughter, Mrs. Myrtle Doyle of Kankakee, is 20 years of age. He was a member of the Holy Trinity church of Bloomington.
Mr. Shannon was in government service during the Civil war, being in the transportation department. He assisted in laying the first rails on the Illinois Central from Chicago to Cairo & saw the work completed.
All of the children & their families were present at the funeral, as wel as Mr. & Mrs. William Marr, of Urbana & Mrs. Deany of Kankakee.
The deceased was nearly ninety-eight years of age at the time of his death & he will be remembered by all of our people as a man of the highest integrity. He was a resident of this community during the early days, having resided upon his fine farm, which was located 3 miles north & about two miles east of here.

These 3 siblings, Thomas, Anna and Elizabeth came from Ireland in the 1800s.
