Clara's father Thomas Gardner immigrated from Lancashire, England, and settled in Windsor Mills, Quebec, where he met and married Mary Phillips of Melbourne, Quebec, whose parents were also English.

She was the eighth of 10 children and, sadly, her mother died when Clara was only nine. The children were spread out amongst their married siblings while their father briefly remarried to an American, Lucy, who raised the two youngest.

At age 16 Clara appears to have married accountant and insurance agent Charles Anson Miller, whose father and uncles were educated at Trinity College Dublin before immigrating to Quebec City in 1825.

Clara herself suffered from what we now call postpartum depression after the birth of her ninth child. Her daughter Delle (my grandmother) had to give up her teaching position in 1900 and return home to raise her four youngest siblings.

By 1916 Clara and Charles had retired to Montreal where they enjoyed their many grandchildren. Their two sons-in-law, the Rev. Dan Mick & the Rev. Harvey Carmichael, officiated at their funerals.
