Eighth of nine children born to accountant / insurance man Charles Anson Miller and Clara Lilian Gardner in Windsor Mills, Quebec.
Sadly, after the ninth child their mother Clara Lilian developed severe postpartum depression. Older daughter Adele had to give up her teaching position, return home and essentially raise the four youngest including Clara Augusta.
The Miller family had a great respect for higher education. Her great-grandfather, a tailor in Co Longford, sent three sons to Trinity College Dublin (TCD), beginning in 1814.
Clara graduated from Normal School (teachers' college) as did three of her sisters. She taught kindergartner 12 years before marrying John Charles Laird in Coaticook in 1924.
Their daughter Ruth Jean was baptised in Côte-des-Neiges by Clara's brother-in-law, the Rev. Daniel Mick, husband of Clara's oldest sister Annie.
Clara was widowed in 1944 when John died prematurely due to a spleen injury from an ice hockey stick in his youth.
