Jennie G. Baker, 100, homemaker
Jennie G. (Steele) Baker, 100, died Sunday in Lancashire Hall after a brief illness.
Mrs. Baker, who marked her 100th birthday Jan. 18, told a reporter, "My life was very uneventful, but I had plenty of working."
Born in Lancaster, she was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Emma Silvius Steele.
Orphaned when she was 8 years old, she was sent to York to live with a farm family. Eventually she went to live with a farm family in New Danville.
She worked for two years at the former American Caramel Co.
A homemaker most of her life, she was the mother of 11 children, and she recalled with pleasure their family outings, Christmas observances, and regular church attendance.
Her husband, Nathan Hale Baker, died in 1955.
Mrs. Baker enjoyed singing and cooking. Her apple dumplings were called the "best in town" by her daughter Mary Schober.
Mrs. Baker was a member of Faith United Church of Christ and its Friendly Circle.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary E., wife of Russell S. Schober, of Columbia, and Dorothy M. Kurtz, Dawn M. Herr and Nancy J., wife of Anthony Vital, all of Lancaster; a son, John W., husband of Yvonne Baker, of Strasburg; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Faith United Church of Christ, 1204 Wabank Rd., Lancaster, PA on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Melvin S. Mundie officiating. Interment in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Please omit flowers.
