Mrs. John Diekmann, whose maiden name was Miss Minnie Michales, was born in Prussia, Germany, Sept. 6, 1857 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Luelle Frohriep, on Friday morning, Dec. 9, 1921, aged 64 years 2 months and 3 days.
Her parents, Ernest and Caroline Johanna Marie (Koch) Michales came with their family to America in 1869 coming to Centreville and location to Sherman township. There were nine children in the family of whom three survives, Charles of Oak Hill, Kansas; Mrs. Hannah Hagen and Mrs. Bertha Timm of Sherman township; Frederick of Nottawa.
She was married to Frederick Warkentine of February 25, 1874. To them five children were born of whom there survives Mrs. Mary McKale of Burr Oak; Herman Warkentine of Sherman, Mrs. Alvena Borgert of Sturgis and Mrs. Lillie Frohriep of Colon. Mr. Warkentine died March 20 1888.
On Jan. 2 1890 she was married to John Diekmann. To them six children were born of whom there are living Mrs. Luelle Frohriep of Burr Oak; Edward Diekmann of Nottawa and William of Cleveland, Ohio. There are three step children, Mrs. Charles Custer of Colon; Mrs. Mary Fisher of Sturgis and Charles Diekmann of Centerville. There are twenty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
All her life since their arrival in Centerville has been spent in the county, engaged in farming until five years ago when failing health compelled removal from the home farm one and one half miles east of Nottawa, to Burr Oak where they could be near some of their children.
For several years Mrs. Diekmann has been in feeble health and for the past six weeks has been confined to her bed being tenderly cared for by her husband and daughter, Mrs. Luelle Frohriep and her other children. She was a woman of indominatable will and indefatigable industry. Devoted to her children and loved ones.
In her youth she was confirmed in the Sturgis Lutheran Church. Later she became a charter member of Salem Lutheran Church in Sherman and later her membership was transferred to Centerville Lutheran Church. After moving to Burr Oak the membership was transferred to the Burr Oak Church. A real force in the community has been removed. She was a wise counselor a true friend and a devoted mother whose heart was absorbed by her family and her church and neighbors.
The funeral occurred at the home on Sunday at 12:30 o'clock and at the Salem Lutheran Church at two o'clock. Rev. Noffze officiating. Her body rest in the church cemetery.
