Valentine and his brothers David and John (as well as some other siblings) changed the spelling of their surname from Rosenbaum to Rosenbalm. David's son Asa, however, changed back to his grandparents' spelling.

Valentine's brother, John Rosenbalm, was married to Rachel Fox, Valentine's wife's sister.
