He was a machinist mate in the U. S. Navy. He was a member of the Sixth Naval construction battalion which received a presidential citation for constructing Henderson field and other installations on Guadalcanal under heavy fire from September 1942 to January 1943.

PORTERVILLE, Calif. Funeral services were held March 1 for Howard E. Bentz, 72, of Porterville, Calif., and formerly of Fremont. Mr. Bentz died Feb. 26 in Porterville. He was born Oct. 15, 1912, in Norfolk and graduated from Fremont Senior High School. He attended Midland Lutheran College, and served with the sixth construction battalion on Guadal Canal during World War II. For 35 years, Mr. Bentz was a plant foreman at Belridge Oil Co. near Porterville. He was a member of First Christian Church of Christ Disciples in Porterville, the A&A Scottish Rites of Freemasonry and the DAV of Bakersfield, Calif.; and was a member of the Porterville Lodge No. 303 AF&AM of Porterville. He also was a past master of the Masonic Lodge at Fellows, and received the 50-year pin from the Porterville Lodge in 1984.
