WHEELER - HARRIS Wedding

A wedding of national as well as local interest occurred Thursday in New York, when Miss Julia, an attractive daughter of General Joe Wheeler, the noted confederate cavalry leader, was untied in marriage with Mr. Wm. J. Harris, private secretary to Senator Clay and one of Cedartown's most prominent young men. The happy couples are expected home in a few days from a sojourn at Atlantic City, N. J., and will occupy their handsome home on Park Avenue. Their host of friends here and elsewhere render heartiest congratulations.

The following accounts of the nuptials will be read with interest:

NEW YORK, JULY 28, 1905

The wedding of Miss Julia Knox Wheeler, daughter of General Joe Wheeler, and Mr. William J. Harris, of Cedartown, Georgia took place here last evening at 6:30 o'clock at St. Thomas' Church. The wedding was a quiet but beautiful affair and many distinguished guests, friends of the bride and groom and their families, were present. Rev. Ernest M. Stiers performed the ceremony. Miss Helen Gould, who is one of the close friends of the bride, was among those present.

The bride and groom left for a short wedding journey last night, after which they will return to Cedartown to reside. Mr. Harris is secretary to Senator Clay and is closely identified with the business and political life of Georgia, and with the wide circle of friends he and his bride have over the South they are assured a most cordial reception on their return to that section.

The wedding gifts were numerous and rare. Among the most prominent was a silver loving cup, the gift of Camp Wheeler, Confederate veterans, of Atlanta.

At the wedding here the bride was attended by her sister and Mrs. E. M. Stiers, Miss Crilly and Miss Smith. Dr. Seale Harris, brother of the groom, was best man. The ushers were Capt. Joseph Wheeler, Jr., and Mr. William R. Kirkland.

General Joe Wheeler was in town last night for the purpose of attending the wedding of one of his quartet of daughters, Miss Julia Wheeler, who was married last night to William Julius Harris, of Georgia at St. Thomas' Church by the Rev. Ernest M. Stiers, the rector, who, as an intimate friend of the Wheelers, had come down from his summer home in Lake George to officiate.

The bride, arrayed in white lace and with a veil of tulle, a necklace of pearls around her neck and a large bouquet of lilies of the valley in her hand, was attended by her three sisters; Lucy, who reigns as mistress at the old Wheeler homestead near Huntsville, Ala; Annie Wheeler, who went through the Spanish War in Cuba as a volunteer nurse, and Caroline Wheeler, who helped represent the south at the last reunion of Confederate Veterans at Louisville. The gallant old general's son and namesake, himself a Captain in the Army, was one of the ushers. William R. Kirkland was the other, while Dr. Seale Harris, of Union Springs, Ala., officiated as best man. The bridegroom is a native of Cedartown, GA., and is one of the leading insurance men of that state. General Wheeler and daughters spend much of their time in New York, and in spite of the absence from town of people at this time of the year, there was quite a large gathering of friends and acquaintances in St. Thomas' Church, and at the reception which followed the ceremony.---
