The founder's grandson, Ben, would marry Daniella Jones, daughter of a nearby plantation owner, Richard Jones. Widowed after only a short time, Daniella would inherit Pond Spring and later remarry -- this time to young former Confederate cavalrymen named Joseph Wheeler (although they met during the War, they would not marry until 1866).

The Evening Star (Washington, D.C.) May 20, 1896 page 7
The friends in Congress of Gen. Wheeler of Alabama were very much shocked this morning to learn that he had lost his wife, Mrs. Daniella Wheeler, who died at the family home, 1730 New Hampshire Avenue, in this city, last night at 9:15. Mrs. Wheeler was taken ill last Sunday morning, and her physicians pronounced the malady to be appendicitis. She grew worse very rapidly, and yesterday morning at 3 o’clock Drs. Taber Johnson, Lincoln, and Bowen consulted and decided that an operation was necessary.

The operation was performed, but soon afterward it became apparent that Mrs. Wheeler’s trouble was complicated by peritonitis, and her condition became critical. Everything was done to relieve her that was possible for the physicians to do, but she continued to sink, and passed away last night, as stated, surrounded by her sorrowing family.

The funeral will take place tomorrow at 10 o’clock at 1730 New Hampshire Avenue and the remains will be temporarily placed in the vault at Oak Hill until removed to Alabama later. Mrs. Wheeler was very popular in the southern colony at the national capital, and her sudden death will come as a severe blow to a large circle of friends.
