The community was shocked and grieved early last Monday, December 31, when it was learned that Owen Horsman had passed away quite suddenly at his home in Kirwin. He had lived most of his life here and will be greatly missed. The deepest sympathy is extended to his wife, Esther.

Owen Noel Horsman, son of Lucy M. and David D. Horsman, was born December 26, 1888, in Kirwin, Kansas, and departed this earthly life at his home in Kirwin on December 31, 1956.

Owen went to Missouri with his parents when a small child where he grew to manhood. At the age of 21 he returned with the family to Kirwin where he has since made his home, with the exception of the time spent serving his country in World War I from April 16, 1917, when he enlisted at Fort Logan, Colorado, until his discharge December 26, 1918; and the year he spent in Washington after his marriage to Esther Bogart on April 5, 1938.

He was a member and took an active part in the American Legion, the Masonic Blue Lodge, the Masonic chapter, and the Eastern Star. He has also served as past Grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Owen was always cheerful in spite of the pain and suffering he has borne for several years. He has served his town and community well and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was very fond of animals and loved the out of doors, where he spent many happy hours working in his garden and among his flowers.

Those of Owen's family preceding him in death were his mother and father, and two sisters, Cecil and Nora. Those mourning his departure are his wife and companion, Esther; a step-daughter, Lee Ann Gallagher and family of California.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Federated church in Kirwin with Rev. Harley Siders in charge. Music was by Mrs. Karl Ronan and Mrs. James Lemon, accompanied by Mrs. Warren Stockman.

Pallbearers were Earl Lister, Vern Blomfield, Carl Lare, Will Adams, Charles Stuckman and Very Willey. Floral bearers were Mrs. Beryl Plymesser, Ethyl Sherraden, Mary Gripp, Carrie Busby, Mildred Marple, and Doris Eller. The Masons held graveside services, and the American Legion had the service of firing squad and taps.
