Deceased Name: Elizabeth Stapley Bingham

Funeral services for Elizabeth Bingham, 95, of Safford, were conducted Tuesday, April 20, at 10 a.m. at the Safford LDS Stake Center by Bishop Lynn Smith of the Safford Fifth Ward. Concluding services followed in the Safford Cemetery.
Elizabeth Jane Root Stapley Bingham was born May 3, 1908, in Pima, the daughter of Glen Gardner Root and Maggie Craig.

She was the second of seven children born to this union.

At the age of 3, her family moved to the foothills of the Graham Mountains on the old Cluff's Ranch. In 1922, Elizabeth's family relocated to Safford, where she continued her education. Following her graduation from high school, Elizabeth married Reed Bingham on Oct. 17, 1925, in Layton.

Together Elizabeth and Reed remained in the Gila Valley and began to raise their family. To their union were joined three sons, Glen Reed, Terry Joe and Danny Kay. Because Elizabeth remained in the home tending to their children, Reed worked at various jobs, including the clothing store owned by J. Green in Safford, and farming.

In 1954, Reed suffered a heart attack and passed away.

Soon thereafter, Elizabeth enrolled in beauty school. She studied hard and opened her own beauty shop, The Ponytail Beauty Salon, built before she graduated from the school.

In 1962, Elizabeth met Dutch Stapley. They were later married on April 29, 1963. Together Elizabeth and Dutch made their residence in Phoenix. They enjoyed spending time together and traveled to various destinations including Hawaii, New York to attend the Hill Camorah Pageant, Niagara Falls and Rome, Italy.

In 1979, Dutch passed away from complications of a heart attack. Elizabeth soon returned to Safford, where she resided until her passing on April 16, 2004.

Throughout her lifetime, Elizabeth was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in numerous capacities, including Primary teacher, Stake and Ward Relief Societies and Young Women's class. Those she worked with always loved Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is survived by her three sons, Glen Reed (Verma) of Safford, Terry Joe (Connie) of Safford, and Danny Kay (Carol), of Safford; three sisters, Hermione Kempton, Louise Rowley and Marsha Ferrin; a brother, Jesse Root; 20 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. Her husbands, Reed Bingham and Dutch Stapley, preceded Elizabeth in death.

Arrangements were entrusted to Bunker's Caldwell Chapel.
