Arnt Nysetvold -Owner of Nysetvold Electric
Wednesday October 3, 1979
By Kathy Okeson
Arnt Nysetvold, proprietor of Nysetvold Electric, hasn't moved very far from his place of birth. Arnt and his family only live across the alley and directly south of the house where Arnt was born, which is where the Fred Johnsons now live.
Nysetvold graduated from T.V.H.S. in 1939, and one week later began working for the Minnesota Utilities Power Company. Arnt's brother-in-law, who-was manager of the company for this area at the time helped Arnt get the job, Nysetvold said. While employed with the company, Nysetvold worked part-time at the power plant in Heiberg and also did line work until 1942.
At that time Arnt joined the service with the Signal Corp and attended school at Camp Crowder to learn the switch-board installation of phones. He got into this field mainly because of his employment prior to the service. Until 1945 he was stationed in the European Theater, Arnt added.
After his release from the service, Nysetvold went to work in Warren for the city's lights and power for a year and a half.
He then came back to Twin Valley and worked with Art Dahlbom, a local electrician, until 1951. By working with Dahlbom, Nysetvold was able to get the experience he needed to become an electrician.
In 1952, he went to St. Paul and took an exam to become a Class B Master electrician. That same year Arnt started his own business as an electrician. That's when REA was coming into the area and all the farm wiring was starting up, he explained.
For two years he worked as a Class B Master electrician, and then in 1954 he went back to St. Paul, took a second exam, and got his Class A Master's license., Because Arnt had enough experience, he wasn't required to take any schooling before taking the exam.
Nysetvold has been in business since that time, and now has his son, Joel, working for him. Before graduating from high school, Joel worked with Arnt off and on during the summers. .
Following graduation, Joel went to the Moorhead Area Vocational Technical Institute for two years, majoring in electricity. After completing his schooling, he came back to Twin Valley and has been working with Arnt since then. He now has his Class A Journeyman's license, and will be taking the exam for the Master in a year or so. An electrician now has to put in so many years as a journeyman before getting his master's license, Arnt explained.
Arnt likes his line of work and said it's interesting because of always meeting new and different people. Because of the indoor and outdoor-type jobs, Nysetvold says there is a great variety of work to be done, instead of just sitting at a desk which would drive him nuts, Arnt added.
The fall and first part of the winter are usually the busiest times for them, Arnt said. They have work to do all the time though, and never seem to get caught up, he added.
An electrician may also have to work 24 hours a day, Arnt said. Trouble calls come sometimes during the night, and someone has to go out, he added.
When he does have some free time, Arnt enjoys fishing, golfing and bowling. They've also done quite a bit of camping with the kids, he said.
Eventually Joel will take over his business, Arnt said, giving him, his wife, Verna, and their children more free time to enjoy camping and other activities together.
