On January 26, 1943 he entered the United States Army and served until his honorable discharge on December 16, 1945. While in the service he worked as a cartographer and draftsman and saw action in five major campaigns.
He assisted his father in building several homes in the Twin Valley area and apprenticed to various power companies in outstate Minnesota. A major part of his life was spent working with the Willmar Municipal Utilities. On October 23, 1959, he was married to Ida Christina Hara at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar by Rev. Paul Hanson. He moved to Apple Ridge Estates in Appleton in November of 2006.
Orwin was a life member of the American Legion, a member of the Kandiyohi Historical Society and Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. During his life he enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, and traveling.
Orwin died on Tuesday, April 1, at Appleton Area Health Services. He had attained 97 years and 2 months of age.
He is survived by four sisters: Loanna (Wayne) Wagstrom of Moorhead, Judith Pfaff of Appleton, Enid Burkholder of Two Harbors, and Dorothy (Robert) Hammer of Shippensburg, PA; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Preceding Orwin in death are his parents; his wife, Ida, on January 10, 2006; two sisters: Gladys Heiberg and Iona Kvenvolden; and three brothers: Miles, Arnt, and Paul Nysetvold.
