First child of Julius C. Dugger and Mary Hall Dugger,he was married to Mary Engle. He was the father of 20 children.He was commissioned Captain in the Militia at 16 by Governor John Sevier. He served in the War of 1812. He was with General Jackson in the Battle at Horseshoe Ben on March 27, 1814. He also was with Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans on Jan. 8, 1815. In 1853 John filed for and received a pension for his services.
