Josie was the daughter of John Groves Smith and Sarah "Sallie" Duncan. Josie married Albert Curtis on April 14, 1907 in Hardin County, Tennessee. She was 13. They were the parents of 12 children.
After Albert's death, Josie picked cotton to pay for a double marker and it was placed on Albert's grave. As the years went by, and especially after the death of their son Joseph R. G. Curtis, Josie decided to be buried at Center Hill Cemetery in Counce, Hardin County, Tennessee, next to her beloved son R. G. Curtis. Also near Josie's grave are her daughters Raney, Racine, Ressie and several grandchildren. Daughters "Shorty" and Reb are also buried at Center Hill.
