Mary was the daughter of German immigrants and pioneers John J. Yelkin II and Anna C. Dirks. She was born in the German settlement of Febing, Nemaha Co., NE and traveled with her family to CA in a covered wagon when she was 18 years old. Mary married Charles Henry Brunk, grandson of pioneer Christian Bohna, on July 30, 1883 and they had 13 children. A daughter Ruby Caroline is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bakersfield, Kern Co., CA.
