Charles was the son of George W. Brunk Sr. and Caroline Bohna, grandson of pioneer Christian Bohna. His paternal grandparents were Abraham Brunk and Matilda Bond

He is thought to be the first Caucasian child to be born in Havilah, CA. He worked as a vaquero, butcher, miner and cattle buyer. He married Mary V. Yelkin on July 30, 1883 and they had 13 children. A daughter Ruby Caroline
is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bakersfield, Kern Co., CA.
