India C. Maris was born to Jehu and Anna Gray Maris 1 Oct 1863, in Missouri where they lived briefly before returning to their former home area in Henry County, Iowa, where Jehu worked as a blacksmith. By 1880 the father appears to have died, and at age 16, India did millinery work while her sister Emma and mother did dressmaking to help support the family.

India married Amos D. Gray, blacksmith, cir. 1891. They lived in Windsor and had one son, Fred Darrah Gray 1 Aug 1894. After her husband died in 1907, Mrs. Gray remained in the Windsor community for several years, for a time doing bookkeeping for the livery business and sharing a household with her widowed sister Emma DeWees and their mother (1910).

By 1920 Mrs. India Gray, her mother, and her sister Emma's family had relocated near her son in Adams County, Illinois.
