Mar 22, 1882, Faribault Republican Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota:
Honorable Charles A. Wheaton, senior publisher and editor of the Rice County Journal, died at his residence in Northfield on Tuesday morning, the 14th inst., in the seventy-third year of his age. Death came sooner than was anticipated, although his case had been recognized as hopeless. Mr. Wheaton was a man of ability and cultivation, and was much respected in the community in which he lived. He was a native of Syracuse, N. Y., and for some years pursued a mercantile career. He was an ardent champion of the free-soil movement, and ran in one campaign as the candidate of that party for Lieut. Governor. Meeting with financial reverses he removed to Minnesota in 1854, and after living in various places settled in Northfield in 1861, where he became interested in the real estate business with Hon. John W. North. About ten years ago he embarked in the newspaper business as the editor of the Rice County Journal, in which capacity he continued till his death. His influence was always thrown in favor of temperance and those measures which tended to the moral and material welfare of the community. Mr. Wheaton was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1867. He leaves a large family, among them being Dr. C.A. Wheaton and Mrs. N.P. Langford, of St. Paul, and Mrs. Thomas Smith, of Dakota. Husband of Ellen Birdseye and Martha Archibald Wagner.
