Detail of the 1850 Federal Census, Shelby Twp, Ripley Co, IN, showing the household headed by William Ralston (this one has been indexed as "Wilny Rolston"). Ten years later, the wife, Rachel [Davis] Ralston was a widow. The husband is identified in one tree on RootsWeb/WorldConnect as Joseph William Ralston, born 1806 in Nippenose, Lycoming Co, PA [but an 1806 DOB doesn't match up with the age 57 reported in the 1850 census] and is said to have died 1850-1860 in Franklin Co, IN. Can anyone verify?

In this cropped image from the 1860 census in Brookville, Franklin Co, IN, Rachel [Davis] Ralston is a widow, heading a household, and she is age 48, born in PA, so she probably was born in 1812. (She was listed as 37 in the 1850 census and as 57 in the 1870 census, so we can be pretty sure she wasn't born in 1811, and had she been born in 1813, she couldn't have been already 48 in 1860.) Notice that some of the children were born in Ohio and others born in Indiana, and Rachel and her husband (William Ralston) must have moved back and forth across the Ohio-Indiana border frequently -- as did Rachel's Davis relatives.
