Mazzini, who preferred to be called Mark, was the son of Universalist Minister Rev. George Severance and his wife, Huldah J. Stone. He had a younger brother, Channing and a younger sister, Georgianna.

He was a railroad conductor and was married three times:

First to Ella Bickford, February 21, 1876. One son, Winfred Severance, born 19 August 1878. Divorced.

Second to Maud Callow, June 7, 1883. One son, Harry/Harold Lyman Severance, born 12 December 1885. Divorced.

Third to Florence Louise Smith, January 1, 1895. Divorced.

Mazzini died of a heart attack in the Alms House in Unity, New Hampshire, where he had been living for 26 days, having come from Claremont, New Hampshire.
