Son of Abijah Severance and Hannah Searles, George was a Universalist Minister. He married Huldah Judith Stone on May 30, 1850, when he was 30 years old. They had two sons, Mazzini and Channing, and a daughter, Georgianna.

From the December 31, 1890, edition of the Argus and Patriot, Montpelier, Vermont:

"Rev. George Severance started a foot last Thursday, for his home in South Ryegate, via Cabot and Montpelier."

From the March 15, 1899, edition of Argus and Patriot, Montpelier, Vermont:

"Rev. George Severance, for many years a resident of this town, died at the home of Mrs. G. W. Preston, his daughter, in Northfield Farms, Massachusetts, last week. His remains were brought to Sharon for burial."
