MRS. HAROLD VAN ETTEN PASSES
Susan Caroline Van Etten, formerly Susan Caroline Lindley, passed away at her home in Oswego at about 6:45 a.m. on the morning of March 24.
Mrs. Van Etten was born in Bloomington on November 29, 1898, and graduated from the Yorkville high school with the class of 1916. She was married to Harold Van Etten of Bath, Illinois on August 2, 1919 in the parsonage of the Yorkville Congregational Church.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Harold Van Etten, two sons, Robert and Harold, Jr., two daughters, Dorothy and Enid, also her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lindley of Oswego, one brother, John of Oak Park; and sisters, Agnes Wright of Oswego and Ida Cripe of Aurora; George Finley of Oswego and Mrs. Porter, her grandmother of Abana, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 26 from the Oswego Federated Church of which she was a member. Interment will be in the Oswego Cemetery.

Susan Caroline Lindley was born in Bloomington, Illinois on September 29, 1898. She was the oldest of six children born to John and Anna Lindley.
In her early childhood, she lived in Havana, Illinois. She was a graduate of the Yorkville High School, in the Class of 1916. After attending summer school in DeKalb, she taught at Rickard School, Yorkville, Atherton School, Fox, and Union School at Bath, Illinois.
On August 2, 1919, she was united in marriage with Harold Z. Van Etten of Bath, Illinois at the Yorkville Congregational parsonage. Rev. Long officiated.
Four children were born to this union, Robert Scott, Dorothy Joyce, Enid Fern, and Harold Lindley, one brother, John F. Lindley of Oak Park, three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Wright of Oswego, Ida Cripe of Aurora, and Joyce Lindley of Oswego, her grandmother, Mrs. A. Porter of Havana, Illinois, one uncle, Fred E. Porter of Havana, two aunts, Ida Talmadge of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Jesse Harpharr of Sterling, Oklahoma, besides other relatives and friends survive. One brother passed away 16 years ago.
The funeral was held March 26th, from the Oswego Federated Church of which she was a member.
Interment was at Oswego Cemetery.

Note: Harold was born and raised in Bath IL and worked as a farmer in Bath. After his marriage to Susan Caroline Lindley they had rented a house on the edge of Oswego, near the Pearce Cemt. where Enid was born. Harold built their first house (while working as a plasterer for Mr. Heitkotter of Aurora IL) on Jackson St. Oswego IL where son Harold Jr. was born. The family moved to the Cherry Farm on Grove Road, rural Oswego, where Harold ran a truck farm taking vegetables and produce to Farmers Market off River Street in Aurora IL. The family returned to the Jackson St. home and Susan Caroline died there in 1931 of cerebral meningitis, at an early age leaving her husband Harold and four young children. Susan Caroline loved to play the piano and one of her favorite songs "Carolina Moon" was on the piano when she died. Three years later Harold married Florence Elizabeth Warren in Wisconsin. They remained in the same house for several years, and Harold built the Conklin House next door where the family moved to. Later across the street he bought a small house and enlarged it to a four bedroom house. This is where is daughter, Dorothy Joyce married August Raymond Seidelman in August of 1940. Later the family moved to the downtown Oswego area (next to the Clinic) before locating on Polk and Ashland Avenues. While living there he built a house near the Oswego River and lived there for many years. Later building a house on Adams Street west of highway 25. This was their last house in Oswego, before retiring and spending winters in Inverness Florida and summers at Lake Axehandle, New Auburn Wis. Harold died of a stroke that happened while chopping wood for their "Ben Franklin" stove. Florence, his second wife continued spending her summers at Lake Axehandle in the cottage Harold had built ca. 1935. and with her youngest daughter, Nancy Weaver in Boulder Hill, IL.
