Lt. William Drenik was shot down over Corsica on May 4, 1944. A graduate of Trinity High School with the Class of 1941, he entered the Army Air Corps in Jul. 1942. He received his flying instructions at Venice, Fla., and Dale Mowry Field, Tallahassee, Fla., and left for overseas duty in Feb. 1944.

He was sent to the Naples area and had the experience of being chased from his base by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He wrote that "it was some sight to see."

Upon leaving Naples, he was transferred to another squadron and had been operating from Corsica. He had a number of missions to his credit and was cited several times for outstanding work.

A Thunderbolt pilot, Lt. Drenik was born in Strabane, a son of Frances and the late Frank Drenik. While attending Trinity High School, he was active in all scholastic affairs and earned his letter in football, basketball and baseball.

In addition to his mother, Lt. Drenik is survived by two brothers, Sgt. Joseph J., Army Air Corps, San Antonio, Tex., and Frank A., Clairton; and one sister, Mrs. Mary J. Drenik Buchanan, Strabane.
