Martha Ann Ellis first married William Martin Carter on July 26, 1849 in Pettis county, Mo. William Carter died in 1865 in Pettis co., Mo. She had at least seven children with Wm. Carter.

Martha married second to Samuel H. Tavener Nov. 7, 1872 in Pettis county, Mo. Martha Ann (Ellis) Carter Tavener died at the age of 76. It is thought that she did not live with her second husband, Samuel Tavener, for very long. He died sometime before 1875. When they married they signed a marriage contract where each of them retained ownership of their considerable properties.
