Mr. Samuel Allen Royer, 95, of 226 Highland Avenue, Waynesboro, PA, died at 12:40 A.M. Sunday, July 19, 2009 in Quincy Village where he was a guest since April 2009.

He was born on October 10, 1913 in Waynesboro; he was the son of the late Thaddeus Garfield and Daisy Maude (Holtzman) Royer. He was a life long resident of the Waynesboro area.

Mr. Royer graduated from the Waynesboro High School with the class of 1934. He later attended trade school in Scranton, PA, where he learned his trade of masonry.

He served in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He also served with MacArthur's 6th Army in Solomon Island. Following his discharge from the Army, he served one enlistment in the Cavalry of the Pennsylvania National Guards.

He and his late wife, Mrs. Mabel Lorraine (Noll) Royer, were married October 5, 1946. They moved to the present residence in 1952. Mrs. Royer died January 4, 1988.

In his early life, he was one of the youngest members of the Waynesboro Police Department. He later was a mason contractor working with his brothers, under the name of Royer Brothers, Inc. Prior to retiring in 1976, he worked as a mason with the union in Washington D.C. for 28 years.

He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church; Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15; B.P.O. Elks Lodge #731; Fraternal Order of Eagle's #1758; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1191; Owls Club and a life member of Wm. Max McLaughlin V.F.W. Post #695 all of Waynesboro.

Mr. Royer enjoyed reading and visiting all his friends at the various clubs.

He is survived by two daughters, Sandra A. Pryor of Sabillasville, MD, Robin Royer of Chambersburg, PA, one son, Samuel A. Royer II of Waynesboro, four grandchildren, a brother, James Royer of Paramount, MD and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Janet White, Hazel Keough, Mildred Spangler and Catherine Gardenhour, six brothers, John Royer, Paul Royer, Donald Royer, Richard Royer, Robert Royer and Ralph Royer.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 22, 2009 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro with Chaplain Guy Baer officiating. Burial will be in Burns Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, with military honors by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599 of Chambersburg.
