Amos was a 4th Great-Grandson of the Puritan father Edward Colver. He left home as a young man and became a canal worker and farmer; likely working canals both in N.J. and Ohio. The Collver family arrived in Michigan in 1849.

Amos started his square log house with comb roof on 160 acres in Williams Township in late fall/early winter of 1854. He was assisted in building it by Mr. Owen C. White. Martha and the family arrived January 3, 1855 when the house was partially finished, the roof only complete on one side.
