A Cenotaph for a young child David Collver buried near this location following a terrible accident. The family story relates he was crushed under the wheels of his family's wagon during their move West from Ohio towards Cass County Michigan. He was buried by the side of the road, and the Family Bible provides this commentary:

"David Collver was born
in October the 22 - 1844"
"Age four years and
seven months old"
"David Collver Died
May the 22 AD 1849
Mcleen Township New Berlin
Shelby County Ohio"

In those days Fort Loramie, Ohio was called New Berlin. A main pathway for settlers moving north and west was the Auglaize Trail, leaving Fort Laramie and following the route of Ohio 66 and the Miami and Erie Canal northwards.
