Jackson's birth name was Melton Jackson Collver per the family bible. (Possibly, the Melton entry in the bible is a mis-spelling of the phonetically similar Melvin; there are other Melvin Collvers and a Melvina Collver (Culvers).

Jackson's surname was often spelled Collver in his early years; and, in later years, Culver. He usually went by Jackson, but also Jack and sometimes John.

It seems that Jackson had 4 wives: Malina Stafford (m.)6 Nov. 1872, Carrie Almyra Young (m.)circa 1875, Sarah Katherine Cry (m. circa 1883, and Mary Harvey (m.) 1889.
