Mary Elizabeth McNeil was born in Leeds County, Ontario Canada April 3 1862 and departed this life at her home near Colling May 30, 1922, being a little over 60 years of age. In 1880 she came to Michigan with her parents and settled in Almer Township. May 10, 1883, she was united in marriage to Uriah Cross of Columbia Township. The moved directly to the farm which has ever since with the exception of about four years, been her home. She lived to see the place which was little more than virgin forest transformed into a fine fruitful farm and always bore the burdens incident to such a life bravely and without complaint.

To the union were born six children, one daughter and five sons, who with the husband are left to mourn their loss. The children are: Mrs. Elmer Deford of Maple Ridge; Rev. Wm J. pastor of the Free Methodist church at Gladwin; Prof. Sherman T., superintendent of schools at Shelby and Urvan U., Charles M., and C. Vernon, farmers near Caro together with 16 grandchildren. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Charles Kirkpatrick of Caro, two brothers, Wm S. McNeil of Caro, and James E. McNeil of Columbia, besides a host of other relatives. Although in declining health for a number of years, her condition did not seem serious until the last four weeks, when her suffering became great at times. Her death was due to a complication of diseases.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon at the Free Methodist church of which she had been a member for over thirty years with the exception of the short time she resided in Maple Ridge. She was devoted to her home and church and seemed to have little interest outside of these and will be greatly missed in both, as well as the neighborhood in which she lived. Her staunch Christian faith and example were an inspiration to all who came in contact with her. Rev. S. H. Porterfield of Sandusky, district Elder of the Port Huron district, officiated at the funeral which was held at the Hall church. He was assisted by Rev. A.A. York of Mayville and Rev. A.A. Davis her pastor. Among those attending the funeral for a distance besides the ones mentioned, were Rev. E.A. Cross and Mr. and Mrs. H.P. Smith and daughter Marie of Highland Park, Rev W. J. Cross of Saline; Rev. A. A. York, wife and mother of Mayville; Rev. Potbury and Mrs. Robert Hockaday and three daughters of Yale; Mrs. Delbert Frent and Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Tobias of Akron. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Her five sons and one son-in-law were the pallbearers who laid her to rest in the family lot in Almer.
