In 1942, he became assistant to Lyndon B. Johnson. At the time of his death, he was assistant to the vice-president of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson just three months before he would become president of the United States. Lyndon B. Johnson came to the funeral.
Survived by hs wife; three sisters - Mrs. Marvin McCleskey, Mrs. R.C. Martin, Mrs. Troy Ikard; one brother - Frank Stegall.
