John married Catherine BROWN, the oldest daughter of the Rev. John Brown and wife Elizabeth FALLS, on October 16, 1822, in Rockingham County, Virginia. Together, they had at least 8 children; Elizabeth Magdalene, Jerome Harman Brown, Eleana, Theodore Napoleon, John Wiklif, Samuel Addison, James Montgomery, and William Layton Sellers.
After Catherine's death on May 17, 1842, John remarried to Frances Sterrett Bell.
