William's mother, Catherine (Brown) Sellers, died May 17, 1842, when William was just two years old. William remained in Churchville into the late 1850s, presumably working on the family farm. Where William was located is unknown from about 1858 until he was listed in the household of his father, John Sellers, and step-mother, Frances Sterrett (Bell) Sellers, on the 1870 Census for Augusta County, Virginia. It is my opinion that he lived for a time in Albemarle County with his brother, John Wiklif Sellers, on the "Markwood" estate of John's father-in-law, Willis Wood, near Earlysville. After John's death on May 20, 1861, I also believe that William remained on the Markwood estate for several years and was in Albemarle County until either 1869 or early 1870 prior to being listed in the household of his father, John Sellers, in the area west of Hebron Church for the 1870 Census.
Exactly 3 weeks prior to his death, William married Sarah M. "Sallie" Whitehurst on May 31, 1871, in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia. Sallie never remarried and spent the rest of her life noting herself as "Mrs. S. W. Sellers" and, in some cases, added the appendage, "Widow of W. L. Sellers".
Per his Death Record filed in Augusta County, Virginia, William L. Sellers died on June 21, 1871, due to "Consumption" (Tuberculosis). The Informant for the information, William K. Woodhouse also stated that William's occupation was that of "Minister" at the time of his death.
