Elizabeth White Tipton, 85, a retired nursing home operator who was active in civic and health groups in Montgomery County, died June 26 at Suburban Hospital. She had had a series of strokes.
Mrs. Tipton was born at “Inverness,” a family property at Dickerson, Md. She was graduated from Virginia College in Roanoke, Va., and then taught at the Dickerson school. She later taught at Brierly Hall Academy in Poolesville.
From 1940 to 1947, Mrs. Tipton worked for Montgomery County Lay Health Council. In1950, she and her late husband, Charles M. Tipton, opened the Tipton Nursing Home in Rockville. Mrs. Tipton continued to operate the business until her retirement in 1967.
Mrs. Tipton was a former trustee of Suburban Hospital and a past president of the Montgomery County Council of Homemakers Club, the Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Montgomery Count Nursing Home Association. She was a member of the board of the Montgomery County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
She also was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Poolesville and was the organist there for many years. At the time of her death, she lived at the Kensington Garden nursing home.
Her husband died in 1955. Survivors include two daughters, Ann Lee Pararas, of Rockville, and Mary Bodmer, of Kensington; two sons, Wellstood, of Kensington, and Dr. Charles M., of Iowa City, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
