According to written accounts both had spouses and children prior to their union who died in the Arkansas and Missouri area and Sarah's daughter Mary Francis Seaborn who died in Texas. Eight children were born to them; Martha Frances, James Milford, Samuel Nathan, Sarah Elilious, Lillie May, Osker Ely, John Bluford and Robert Lee. Osker died at 13 with a ruptured apendix. It is said that Martha, Lillie and Elilious all died of tuberculosis. Both Lillie and Martha left young children.
