Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend Byron John Gilbert passed away Feb. 20, 2010, peacefully at his home in Provo.
Byron was born Nov. 19, 1928, to John Alma and Geneva Gilbert. He married Emma Rae Berrett on Jan. 21, 1952, in the Salt Lake Temple. He and his sweetheart Em have been together for 58 years.
Byron is survived by his children Tamra Skinner (Craig), Bob Gilbert (Becky), John Gilbert (Jan), Linda Leach (John), Ann Mecham (Darrell), JaNae Warnock (David), Randall Gilbert, Kate Udall (Brady), Cheryl Moffat (Greg). He has 47 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Byron is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lexia Melissa Gilbert, and a grandson, Matthew John Gilbert.
Byron was raised in the Uintah Basin, which he still called home. He graduated from Roosevelt High and received a Bachelor's degree from BYU in 1956 in Animal Husbandry. Later he returned to the "Y" and earned a Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance. Byron served a mission for the LDS church to Northern California. He continued to serve in the church holding callings as Young Men's president, Bishop, High Councilor, among others. But his true calling was that of a teacher. He and Em served together in the Kenya Nairobi and Canada Manitoba missions. He also served his country in the Army during the Korean war.
Byron taught seminary and institute for the LDS church for 34 years with the longest duration being in Roosevelt, Utah. He influenced numerous youth over the years with his positive attitude and genuine interest. He had a love for BYU sports and followed them faithfully throughout his entire life looking forward to the upcoming game.
He always had livestock. He was a rancher at heart and loved spending time with his heifers. He loved riding horses up in the Uintah mountains and spent time looking for the lost Rhodes mine. His favorite hobbies were hunting and fly fishing on the Uintah and Whiterocks rivers. Byron and Em both found joy working side by side in their garden, potatoes being their greatest pride. His optimism and clever humor will be missed by all who knew him. He had a gift for making others feel special and important.
A viewing will be held from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the Timpview Chapel (2900 N. 650 E., Provo, Utah) on Thurs., Feb. 25. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. The family will greet friends at the Hullinger Mortuary in Roosevelt, Utah, from 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 25.
The interment will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Fri., Feb. 26. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 64. Condolences may be viewed and sent at www.hullingermortuary.com
