MR. ROBERT MITCHELL BROWN, JR.

Mr. Robert Mitchell Brown, Jr. passed away at the local hospital on Monday, January 27, 1975 after a long illness. Funeral services for Mr. Brown, age 84 of Sandersville, were held Friday, January 31 at the Mayo Funeral Home at 3 P.M. with the Reverend James Lewis of the Sandersville Christian Church and the Reverend Marlon Lastinger of Sandersville First Baptist Church officiating. He was buried in the Old City Cemetery. The active pallbearers were Julian (Dock) Evans, Jesse D. Mize, Billy King, Bobby Moore, John Lewis Robinson, and Joe Underwood.

The honorary pallbearers were W.N. Summerlin, M.W. Dukes, Marvin Hartley, Sr., S.G. Mercer, Sr., Dr. Osgood Bateman, Roy Etheridge, Neil J. Tanner, T.A. English, Dr. Bob Robinson, Richard Irwin, and Barney Riner.

Mr. Brown resided in Sandersville most of his life and was a graduate of Sandersville High School. For many years he was an electrical consultant with the Southwestern and Middle Western Divisions of Western Electric and later owned and operated the Brown Printing Company of Sandersville. He served on the City Board of Education for a period of time. He was the son of Robert Mitchell Brown, Sr. and Lucretia Frances Key Brown. Mr. Brown felt a genuine concern for his fellowman and will be remembered in the words of Leigh Hunt in one of his poems.

"I pray thee, then write me as one that loves his fellow-men.'

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night it came again, with a great wakening light, and showed the names whom love of God blessed,'

And, lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest!"

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Camilla Brown Oxner of Batesburg, South Carolina, Miss Nell Brown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Mrs. Marie Brown Peterson of Ailey, Georgia; one niece, Mrs. Francella Adams Wiley of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, three nephews, Dr. John Phillips Adams, Jr., of San Luis Obispo, California, Robert Mitchell Brown, III, of San Antonio, Texas, Lt. Colonel Hal Brown, Jr., of San Diego, California, fifteen great nieces and nephews and one great great niece.

Mayo Funeral Home of Sandersville was in charge of the arrangements.


A document from the Brown family records the following information:

"9 - Robert Mitchell Brown Jr. born 1890 died 1975. Marker only. He is actually buried with his grandmother Sarah Gainer Brown in another part of the City Cemetery."

NOTE: Sarah Gainer Brown would have been his great-grandmother.

This information was found in papers and remains of a family Bible that had originally belonged to the Mitchell family, found in 1980 in the Brown house on North Harris in Sandersville, Georgia by Robert Mitchell Brown, III (1923-2001), son of Henry Wiley "Hal" Brown.
