The 3rd Iowa Infantry's service during his enlistment included the Battle of Ft Donelson,TN Feb 15-16 1862, the infamous Battle of Shiloh,TN Apr 6-7 1862, Siege of Corinth,MS Mar-May 1862, the desperate Battle of Corinth,MS Oct 3-5 1862 when Confederates tried to retake the city. From Dec 9 - Dec 23 1862 , the regiment marched to Tuscumbia,AL from Pulaski,TN in pursuit of guerrilla raiders on one of the hardest marches in its history.
In 1863, the regiment was loaded into steamboats and sent to Vicksburg,MS. They were fired upon near Greenville,Ms but speedily dislodged the enemy. The regiment took position in the trenches at Vicksburg on May 25 and actively engaged until the capitulation of Vicksburg in June. It took part in the assault of Jackson, MS where it sustained great loss.
After the Red River Campaign, those whose term of service(3 years) was up and did not reenlist, were mustered out.
